When life hands you lemons, make the best lemonade life has ever tasted. Here’s four ways to get through life’s challenges like the confident leader you have become through recovery.
Create Realistic Non-Negotiables
When life has demands, they demand to be met. Learning to live life on life’s terms is part of the gig in recovery. You’re no longer running to drugs and alcohol to try and avoid life or escape its responsibilities. Even though you’re living life according to life, that doesn’t mean you don’t get a say. Some things just have to be done before you can dive into living life. Define what you need to tackle life head on. Whether that’s a full breakfast, 8 hours of sleep, or taking time to meditate, you don’t leave room to bargain. Life can wait until you’re well fed, well rested, and well meditated.
Make Room For Life To Happen
Sometimes life demands and challenges can be a lot of fun. Life isn’t always so serious. In fact, most of the time, it isn’t very serious at all. A cardinal rule in recovery is: don’t take yourself too seriously. You don’t want to miss the opportunity to throw your head back and laugh or get a little silly. Addiction is serious. Recovery is serious. You can seriously enjoy yourself now.
Stick To Your Values
Life’s challenges aren’t always for you to meet. There are actions and responsibilities which might cross your path but don’t require your assistance. Recovery is an opportunity to define your values and learn to live by them. You’ve already gained so many through treatment, like honesty, open-mindedness, and willingness. Allow these values to guide your through life’s challenges. By staying true to who you are, you will get through whatever comes your way with confidence.
Don’t Fall Into Pits Without Boundaries
Boundaries help you discern what’s yours and what isn’t yours. When you don’t set healthy boundaries and you don’t actively practice recognizing them in others, you can walk right into a pit without noticing the sign. There are some places life’s challenges don’t need us to go. You don’t have to, and realistically can’t, fix everything, everyone, all the time. Realize where your efforts are made useful and where they are not. You’ll learn to adapt yourself to healthy boundaries and be effective in the way you approach life’s challenges.
